A plug-in is a small application that can be loaded and accessed by Avid Composer systems. Plug-ins allow new effects to be added or updated without the need to update hardware.
The three types of plug-ins supported in release 7.x are:
1. AVX (Avid Visual Extensions) plug-ins.
2. Adobe Photoshop 2.5 - compatible plug-ins.
3. Digidesign AudioSuite plug-ins
AVX and AudioSuite plug-ins are new for release 7.x .
Photoshop Plug-ins remain unchanged.
AVX Plug-ins
AVX is a plug-in standard for incorporating various third party effects within the Avid System. AVX uses cross-platform software architecture designed to allow software modules to be linked to the host applications.
These plug-ins can be purchased directly from third-party vendors. Examples of AVX Plug-ins are listed below, along with corresponding websites.
1. Aurorix. Digieffects. www.digieffects.com
2. Ultimatte. Ultimatte Corporation. www.ultimatte.com
3. Boris. Artel Software. www.artelsoft.com
4. ICE. Integrated Computing Engines. www.iced.com
Installing AVX Plug-ins
* Exit Composer application.
* Copy the plug-in files and the application to the AVX_Plug-ins folder in the Media Composer folder in the Internal Hard drive
* Relaunch composer and open the effects palette. The AVX plug-in effects will appear in the effects palette.
AVX Plug-Ins are non-real time effects and will require rendering. ICE Fx for Avid can be purchased with a Proprietary board set, which will facilitate render times. This board needs to be installed in Slot 6 in the Macintosh 9600. Avid does not recommend installing this board in the Macintosh 9500 due to
thermal considerations.
Adobe Photoshop Plug-ins
As with previous versions of composer, Photoshop version 2.5 plug-ins needs to be installed in the Third Party Plug-ins folder in the Media Composer folder in the internal hard drive. Once installed, the plug-ins will appear in the effects palette
when composer is re-launched.
