Why does the editor application hang when loading Java Virtual Machine when connected in an Avid Interplay environment?

The Editor hangs on this state, because it is unsure whether the Media Indexer has started or stopped.  To resolve this, do the following:

1.  Click Start - Programs - Avid - Interplay Framework - Avid Interplay Workgroup Properties

2.  Click Stop.  If the Media Indexer does not stop:

  • Click Advanced
  • Select Avid Interplay Media Indexer
  • Click Disable
  • Click Exit

3.  Click Apply, then OK

4. Hit F3 on the keyboard, and search for "serviceid" in all Local Drives

5. Delete and trash all files that have the extension .serviceid (they should be located in various Avid folders)

6. Open Avid Interplay Workgroup properties.  If the Media Indexer was disabled from step 2:

  • Click Advanced
  • Select Avid Interplay Media Indexer
  • Click Enable
  • Click Exit
  • Click Start - Apply - OK

Otherwise, click Start, then Apply, and OK

7. Launch Avid

Here are other steps to resolve this:

1) Copy off the alf logs for the Lookup Services on GPS1 and GPS2 (if time allows)

2) Restart the Lookup Service process on GPS1 and check to see if the problem has cleared. (if not, continue)

3) Restart the Lookup Service process on GPS2 and check to see if the problem has cleared. (if not, continue)

** If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the network stack on the server(s)

4) Restart the GPS1 server and check to see if the problem has cleared. (if not, continue)

5) Restart the GPS2 server and check to see if the problem has cleared.

6) If the logs were not copied in Step 1, copy them now.

If the customer is in a hurry, it is not recommended, but reinstalling the Interplay Components (Access, Framework, and MI) have resolved this.  Specifically the MI has fixed this.  See case 10681183
