Why do I get a message "access denied" and why can't I open bins or projects?

This problem is normally caused by file right system in Windows XP. This problems are more common in Windows XP than 2000. Note, users should always have Admin rights. Without Admin rights you can not use the software. Be sure as well that you installed the Windows optimize tool (see install guide). This will change some settings regarding permissions which are necessary to run the Avid software. Problems with file access can be triggered by:
  • Using files from an external harddrive to transfer from one system to another, even if you have admin rights on both systems
  • Transferring files over the network from another workstation
  • Creating of a new user after installing the software (even with admin rights)
  • Changing of the user rights on certain files by a user

To solve the problem you can try the following:

Open the Windows Explorer and select from the menu bar Tools Menu - Folder Options - View Tab. Uncheck Simple File Sharing at the bottom of the view list. That must be set in any case.

  1. Go to the folder or files that show the problem. In case of an access proble with the application itself, go to the Avid installation folder.
  2. Right click the folder and go to Properties.
  3. Go to the Security tab and click the Advanced button (if you don't have a security tab, the client is not logged in with admin rights)
  4. Go to the Owner  tab
  5. Select the user who is using the software and tick the option Replace owner on subcontainer and objects.
  6. Press Apply and then OK.
  7. Restart the System.
