What USB to Serial Adapters are supported for Media Composer, Symphony, and Newscutter?

For Media Composer/Symphony prior to 3.0, and Newscutter prior to 7.0, Avid has qualified the USA-19HS, USA-28x, USA-28xa, and USA-28xb by Tripp Lite (formerly Keyspan) for serial deck control on the Macintosh.

  • An RS-232 to RS-422 (Rosetta Stone) serial adapter is also required when using the USA-19HS
  • Drivers are included with the adapter, and are available on TrippLite's website

For Media Composer/Symphony 3.0 and higher, and Newscutter 7.0 and higher, running Leopard (OS 10.5.x) use only the USA-19HS. The USA-x, USA-28xa and USA-28xb models do not provide frame-accuracy with the Leopard OS. The Tiger OS (10.4.x) is more frame accurate with those models.

Attention: The USA-28xg has been known to cause frame-accuracy issues and should not be used with any Avid Editor product.
