Why do I get a message "Exception: DISK_ACCESS_DENIED"?
This message can have several causes:
You will get this error if you attempt to send to an HDV device on a Mac as a Standard user. If you are using an Administrator account it will work properly. The only way to successfully send to an HDV device is to use an Administrator account or set the export path to an external hard drive rather than a folder on the Macintosh HD.
The message "Exception: DISK_ACCESS_DENIED" indicates that the file that Avid is trying to access does not have the proper permissions settings. It might happen when media files are being scanned.
PC:
First, check that Simple File Sharing setting is not turned on. This sets special permissions on files and causes access problems for Avid.
- Double-click My Computer. From the Tools menu, select Folder Options...
- Click the View Tab and in the Advanced Settings window, scroll to the last option Use Simple File Sharing. If this is checked, uncheck it and click OK.
- Incorrect file permissions will still need to be corrected. Right-click the folder that does not have the proper permissions and select Properties.
- From the Security Tab click Add...
- In the Select Users window, type Everyone and then click Check Names and click OK.
- Finally, in the Folder Properties window, select Everyone, check Full Control in the Permissions window and click OK.
To adjust permissions for an entire PC media drive:
- From My Computer, right-click the drive and choose Sharing and Security...
- Select the Security tab and then click the Advanced button.
- Select the Owner tab, highlight the current Windows user from the list, check Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and click Apply.
- From the Permissions tab, click Add User, type "Everyone" and click Check Names (an underline should appear).
- For Permissions, choose Apply onto: This folder, subfolder and files, check Full Control: Allow and click OK.
- Check the box for Replace permission entries on all...then click Apply.
- Finally, click Yes to the warning and OK to close the Properties window.
MAC:
- Go to Finder and select the Volume to which media is captured .
- From the Finder menu, go to File > Get Info or press the Apple + I keys.
- Navigate to the "Ownership & Permissions" section of the Info window. Expand the arrow to reveal details.
- Check that permissions are set to Read & Write for the "You Can" permission.
- Logged in as Administrator, you can change Read & Write permission for multiple users and groups within the "Details" section of "Ownership & Permissions" based on your site's requirements.
Attached below you will find a .pdf file with screen shots for both Mac and PC permission adjustment.
If you experience this message when closing bins or exiting project, then the Read-Only flag on one or more of the MSM files gets turned on. It can be turned off by going into the property settings on the MSM file and deselecting the Read-Only option or, you can simply delete the Database file and have Avid rebuild it.
A Windows NT client running on a Unity configuration experienced the following: When attempting to select a Unity volume in the Digitize tool with multiple users, projects, client stations - the client would receive "Disk_Access_Denied [DRIVE LETTER]:\OMFI media files\[CLIENT NAME]\creating.omf".
However, if no bins were open within the project, drives could be successfully selected. Likewise, from the desktop level, no files could be copied to the Unity volumes, though copying from the drives was flawless.
Simply trying to open a Unity drive through Explorer would produce: "You may be unable to access all files on this volume." The client systems reported no other errors, the file manager was fully operational, and all users/workspaces had the correct read/write permissions.
The solution in this case was that all workspaces were mirrored, and due to a recent upgrade involving a dongle versioner, mirroring option had been accidentally erased from the dongle. In such cases, check to see whether the dongle allows for mirroring, and whether the problematic workspace is or was mirrored. Newly created, unmirrored workspaces worked flawlessly.
The problem seems to occur often, especially after clips have been ingested or transferred through Transfer Manager. Depending on the workflow/environment (with Unity/Airspace or with Profile) the systems are used in, it might not be possible to just select another tape. There will soon be a CPR for NC Backbay to fix the problem
When digitizing a "Disk_access_denied" message appears, after that all the Media is offline. The first clip digitizes fine and upon stopping the digitize of the second clip a disk access denied appears.
After that you find creating files in the OMFI Media Files folder. Trashing those files together with the .mdb and .pmr files brings the Media back online again (on Unity in a workgroup setup you have only the .pmr). Though it could be, that the problem comes back upon ending the digitize of the second clip.
To solve that issue, have a close look at the tape name you use for digitizing - does it have a project association? If not: use another tape.
Note: Selecting another Project might fix the problem as well (without trashing the .mdb or .pmr files). But you still need to make sure, if the tape you are using for digitizing has a project association.
