Can I run Anti-Virus Software on my Unity MediaNetwork and ISIS Components and Drives?  Are there other methods also available to search for possible "software viruses" or "worms"?

Avid Qualified / Supported Anti-Virus software can be run on Unity MediaNetwork and ISIS Components (Servers and Clients) and Drives.

The current Avid Supported Anti-Virus software programs can be found at:

However, continuous Real-Time scanning is highly discouraged because it CAN Negatively Impact PERFORMANCE.

Avid recommends running scheduled off-hour scans to minimize impact on workflow and production.

If there is a concern that Unity Storage might be compromised by "Software Viruses" or 'Worms", then the following procedure can also be used to search for potential "malware".

  • Mount all Unity MediaNetwork or ISIS Workspaces from at least one client.
  • Use Windows Explorer (do not double-click the drives from My Computer) to look for Hidden & System files in the root directory.
  • Any "autorun.ini" should be deleted on sight.  There is absolutely no reason for any autorun or executable files to be in the root directory of  a Unity Workspace.  This is a common attack/propogation vector.  Using TweakUI or Windows Group Policy to disable autorun on all drive letters is a viable option if such infections become common or chronic.  More information on this functionality is available at:

http://www.windowsreference.com/windows-xp/disable-autoplay-cddvd-in-xp/

This tweak has been very effective in curbing "autorun" infections coming in from editor / technician's thumbdrives, ipods and other removal devices, as well as reducing their propogation via Unity/ISIS workspaces.
